8/10. I mean, wow. Just wow. This album is incredible from back to front. Side A is a strong competitor for the best halves of a Bowie album. The opener, Changes is upbeat and amazing. I particularly love the backing vocals on that track. Incredible. Oh! You Pretty Things is also worth a shout-out. It is catchy and some A-tier pop music. I could go on because every song on this album has quality elements. However, I do think the first half is a few degrees stronger than the second half. However, the best song, to me, is not really a competition: Life on Mars? sees Bowie continuing to write about the cosmos. It is lyrically rich, and the production is incredible. This was also definitely Bowie's best vocal performance at this point in his career. The way he hits that high B-flat at the end of Life on Mars is just ethereal. Life on Mars definitely belongs among Bowie's best songs. If you're looking to get into David Bowie, Hunky Dory is a great place to start.
